My Rolling Papers Review

Initially I didn't care to give a review on this album, but people who know me, know how long I been listening to Wiz so they have been pretty anxious to know what I think. So here goes:

Statistically, Wiz won. Flat out. He's said to have sold something like 200K+ since the album dropped on March 29th. That's good for two reasons: one, it's his first mainstream project and two, it's hard to do those kind of numbers these days because no one really BUYS music anymore.

As for the material on the album? This is definitely a more pop-generated project. Rolling Papers has MAD crossover appeal and that could be the primary reason for the numbers he's done so far. At first listen, I was kind of disappointed. Mostly because I was fresh off the Cabin Fever project and was just expecting something a little heavier from him. However, after giving it some thought, I came to this conclusion: from Grow Season, which is Wiz's first project, up to now he's ALWAYS made pop records. This was just the first time he made a project full of them. The marketing strategy is definitely apparent.

For those who weren't really hip to Wiz Khalifa before Kush x Orange Juice, this will be a really dope album. But for those of us who have been fans for a while, we know Wiz didn't deliver his whole arsenal this time around. Joints to check for are 'On My Level' with Too $hort, 'Rooftops' featuring Curren$y, 'The Race' and the opening track 'When I'm Gone'. Those songs kind of provide you with the Wiz you've always known and been a fan of. The songs that showcase his newer, more mainstream sound would be 'No Sleep', 'Fly Solo', 'Get Your Sh*t, and of course the single 'Roll Up'. The last two of which definitely veer over into the R&B lane.

Whether you're a die-hard fan of Wiz or a new one, you'll find something on this album you like, if not the whole album in general.
