SPORTS WITH FONZ: COLUMBUS BULLIES!? COLUMBUS, OHIO'S PRO FOOTBALL TEAM
Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio and being oblivious to my (@DBell_) city's history is a bit embarrassing. But, Hey, it happens to the best of us. But I'll be sure to share some information about my city to you all, so you won't be fully unaware like I once was.
The Columbus Bullies were a professional football team founded by Phil H. Bucklew (seen in the picture above) in Columbus, Ohio in 1938. The Bullies started out in the American Professional Football Association in 1939. Soon after, they joined the Cinncinnati Bengals and Milwaukee Cheifs in becoming members of the AFL in 1940. They played in Red Bird Stadium, which was the Clippers old stadium. With only two years in the AFL the Columbus Bullies won two Championships prior to ceasing operations when the AFL disbanded due to World War II.
The reason for the early departure was due to Phil H. Bucklew being called in for duties as a US Naval officer. He was also a former professional football player for the Cleveland Rams and a graduate of Columbus North High School and Xavier.
